[Mini Review] Benefit They’re Real Liner & Mascara

Hi everyone,

When I first started blogging two years ago, the Benefit They’re Real mascara was EVERYWHERE. I was dying to try it but $36 was more than what I was used to paying for a mascara. Lucky for me, I was able to get samples of both the push up liner and the mascara.

What Benefit say:

They’re real! lengthens, curls, volumizes, lifts & separates. Our jet black, long-wearing formula won’t smudge or dry out. A specially designed brush reveals lashes you never knew you had!

There’s already thousands of reviews of this mascara but I thought that I’d throw in my two cents anyway. I was expecting a lot from this mascara, it’s considered somewhat of a cult product and is one of Benefit’s bestsellers. Here’s a quick run down of what I liked and didn’t like:

  • The wand does a great job of separating the lashes. It also gave my lashes awesome length. The little ball on the end helps get to the lashes right in the corners and is good for bottom lashes.
  • Very pigmented formula – gave me dark lashes
  • Easy to apply, did not end up going on my eye lids or smudging through the day

  • The wand takes some getting used to! It actually hurts using it for the first few times
  • The effort it takes (and the eye lashes I lose) removing this mascara
  • Gives “crispy” eye lashes which can sometimes flake at the end of the day

Overall, this is a good mascara but I’ve tried mascaras that are A LOT better from Covergirl and Maybelline. I like massive, thick lashes with lots of volumes but I didn’t really get the wow effect I was hoping for from this mascara.

I don’t have a lot to say on the liner, it was crumbly and I found it extremely difficult to squeeze the product out of the tube. I ended up having to throw out the product without using it, not sure if this was due to the product being a sample size? Would love to know if anyone else had a different experience!

I love Benefit Cosmetics in general, and REALLY REALLY wanted to love these products but these two just did not agree with me. If you’ve tried these products, would love to know your thoughts!

Until next time 🙂

  1. I agree with everything you said about the mascara!! I found my lashes to be a bit crispy too haha, although not as crispy as some of the rimmel and maybelline mascaras that irritates the hell out of my eyes. WHen i first saw the brush i was so scared it’ll poke my eyes out! I haven’t tried the push up liner, I’ve heard negative reviews from bloggers I know and positive reviews from big time youtubers, i’ll have to try the little sample I have!

  2. I’m a massive fan of Benefit, but I really didn’t like the Push Up Liner. It was such a hassle to use and not worth it for me. I need something I can use quickly!

  3. The mascara is just meh, i don’t like the brush, but I am up to my third Push Up liner. Yes it is drier than a normal liquid liner, but I kinda like that. Especially for a more mature eye, if the liquid is too runny it just does that: run everywhere! I have had both sample and full size and the full size is so much easier to use!

  4. I’ve been using these samples too and you’re right, the mascara does make my lash dry and crispy, but it does give some volume and length. I’ve got mixed feelings about the mascara… I wouldn’t buy the full size at full price, but I’ve been lucky to get several samples in the last year.
I totally agree with you on the eyeliner, it’s really dry and hard to use so I also chucked mine in the bin.

  5. Hi Fatima – I wasn’t impressed with the mascara either. Somehow I ended up with 3 tubes and tossed them all. Really appreciate your honesty hon xxx

  6. I couldn’t make the liner work for me either. I wasted so much product trying to get rid of the lump on the tip and the line it made was way too thick for my taste. However, I actually didn’t mind the mascara because it gave my lashes good length, although even a $5 dupe performed better in my eyes and I would definitely expect better results from a $30 mascara.
